“The muse was able to speak to me only after I lay dying, only after the Gods had taken the flesh off my bones and broken my heart open, only after I was contained in exile in my little shack on the far outskirts of town. For it was only after I'd wept and raged all the battle and curses out of my being, when I'd given up my will to live and welcomed death as a great relief, when I was quiet enough, empty enough . . . it was then that I was able to see the Invisibles that gathered by my side, it was then that I heard the voices, keening and singing and imploring, that had haunted me all along.” – Aepril Schaile.

“The Furies Prayer” is not a ‘main stream’ release, and doesn’t contain poppy lyrics and the music is not your typical fare.  It is, however, a work of great musical genius with mesmerizingly dark tones, and haunting vocals.

All the music was written and arranged by the very gifted and talented Aepril Schaile.  In my opinion she definitely has what it takes to go into theatrical production.  You can truly envision seeing these songs transformed into a ceremoniously dark drama.

The first track, ‘You Murder Me’, sets the tone for the remainder of the album.  The song starts with a beautiful piano introduction and then suddenly as a clap of thunder or bolt of lightening it rises to a fever pitch as she cries out the mournful tune of a woman scorned.  The vocal effects truly add to the darkened gloom of the emotional pain the ‘character’ is feeling.

The second track or ‘scene’, ‘Disolutio’, is a continuation of the lamentations of the grieving, and ‘disillusioned’ character.  The song overflows with a deep and darkening depression that draws the listener in.

‘Mirror / Spirits’, track four, begins with the feel of a darkened carnival performances of yesteryear and then blends seamlessly into a gothic ritual of calling upon the Gods for vengeance.  The backing vocals give the impression of countless downtrodden, disembodied souls wailing out their own baneful tunes.   The song finishes with a somber orchestral piece adding to the malevolent undertones of the song.

Final track, ‘Alive Another Day’, is a strangely beautiful melodic tale of a drowned body washed ashore, dead, yet the soul aware and still feeling.  It ends with a crashing crescendo of a ‘magnum opus’ performance with vocals and music perfectly blended to heighten the experience.

The Furies Prayer is the debut album of Aepril Schaile and the Judgement.  It made #2 on WMPG’s CMJ chart.  Samples of the music are available at http://www.aeprilschaile.com and http://www.myspace.com/aeprilschaile.  You can also purchase copies of the CD, $13.00 (including shipping) on the Aepril Schaile website and at Bull Moose Music in Portland.

Further Note: Aepril is currently directing a new bellydance project called Exquisite Corpse http://www.myspace.com/exquisitecorpsebellydance. She is also putting together another new project that fuses bellydance and burlesque, soon. Stay tuned!
