MoM 2/2012: Gordon Cunningham
I was born in 1959 in New Jersey, the first child of parents from Maine who had moved to New Jersey for my Dad's first teaching position. Dad was an English teacher, and Mom was a homemaker. I have a younger sister and brother. We moved around a bit as Dad found different jobs. Eventually we found our way back to Maine, where I spent most of my childhood, went to college and settled. I married and bought a house in Standish, ME in 1985, had a son a year and a half later, ran my own computer consulting business, and was involved in the local community theater, now called the Schoolhouse Arts Center at Sebago Lake. After my wife and I separated in 1990, I took on jobs in New Hampshire, and in 1995 I moved to the Ft Lauderdale, FL area for a job. I spent 10 years in FL, not doing anything in music except playing and recording for myself and amassing instruments and equipment for a recording studio I was hoping to have in my near future. That was realized in 2005 when I moved back to Maine and built my first computer for a Sonar and ProTools-based recording system. I bought my current home in 2005, a "fixer-upper", for it's great sound and the ability to make it into my home AND a recording studio.
I first started playing violin when I was about 7 or 8 in Danvers, MA, as part of the local children's orchestra. Apparently I was pretty good, because I recall playing the solo in at least one performance at my grammar school. The violin was a great first instrument - it taught me to use my ears, to be part of an ensemble, and how to read music, among other things. I took lessons and terrorized my parents with my violin practicing for about 4 years till we bought a general store and moved to rural New Gloucester, ME and it was too inconvenient to travel for lessons.
Why LA Club Owners Are At A Loss...
...And some advice from a professional musician
A blog on Scribd.com, Written by Dave Goldberg and reprinted here with permission. Although the LA he is talking about is in California, this article could ring true for any community.
AS I 'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR GIGS LATELY, I've never seen so many free and low paying gigs. Well the economy is bad, so I can understand that a little bit. However, it is no longer good enough for the musician to be willing to perform for little compensation. Now we are expected to also be the venue's promoter. The expectations are that the band will not only provide great music, but also bring lots of people to their venue. It is now the band's responsibility to make this happen, not the club owner.
